CEPELIA, Centrala Przemysłu Ludowego i Artystycznego (Folk and Art Industry Headquarters) was set up as a joint initiative of the Polish Ministry of Culture and Production Aesthetics Supervision Office in 1949. The aim was to provide the communist state protection over folk production of the local folk art collectives vitually unknown outside of Poland. This was the only way for the traditional artists to exist and offer their products in large outlets in the regional cities. Their wares included a wide range of homeware goods, furniture, crockery and toys alongside more ambitious artistic items such as tapestries and sculpture. Cepelia also organised competitions, festivals and granted scholarships for young artists. It was an active participant in the World Council of Handicrafts, an affiliate of UNESCO.
