A walnut burr wood coffee table, 1970s
145cm x 130cm x 33.5cm
The form very much inspired by Japanese furniture. The top uses a dark walnut burr wood within a lighter border, the angular feet again utilise burr wood of two different colours.
Burr wood is a type of tree growth, where a cross-section of the grain reveals intricate swirling patterns. When arranged against each other the knots and swirls create 'eyes' and 'faces'. Prized for centuries, burr wood is used to create luxury furniture, musical instruments and car interiors.
