Ferguson was a New Zealand artist, a frequent exhibitor at the Auckland Society of Arts and the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts all throughout 1950s, 60s, 70s until 1982.
Pastel is a difficult, unforgiving technique and the artworks can be delicate. The textured paper used here gave a good purchase for the pigment and adds a course, gritty effect to the drawing.
Stylistically it reminds me of Egon Scheile: the sitter is presented with honesty and curiosity, captivating the viewer with a natural and unsweetened, although 'unfinished' look.
