Usually made of bamboo and coated with cinnabar and black lacquer, Burmese kalat (sometimes called daung-lan) were used as a food trays during either communal dining events or for ritual food offerings to monasteries. In the secular context, Kalat was placed centrally on the floor among the diners, allowing the participants of the feast to serve themselves directly.
