Nagasawa Rosetsu (follower of), Puppy Chaos

£1,200.00

A Japanese hanging scroll painting, ink on silk, signed Rosetsu and with a seal Gyo

Meiji period (1868-1912)

50cm x 34.5cm

The painting is attributed to the workshop of Nagasawa Rosetsu (1754 - 1799), a master trained under Maruyama Okyo. This links it stylistically with the Maruyama Shijō school.

This Kyoto-based artistic circle took commissions primarily from the wealthy merchants of Kyoto and Osaka. The less formal style derived inspiration from direct observation of nature rather than copying old masters.

Puppies were one of the favourite subjects of Nagasawa Rosetsu and this scroll may have came from under the brush of his direct pupil.
