Kawachi is considered as one of the foremost talents in the modern woodblock artists in Japan. Although a painter by education, since his early formation years he began experimenting with printing techniques allowing him to increase the size of his works. Those include silkscreen, lithography, and even collages. His preferred method remained the classic woodblock print ('anastatic' to use his word) a choice that enhanced the depth and uniqueness of his works.
Kawachi's artistic style is both modern and witty, often drawing inspiration from revered old masters such as early works by Pablo Picasso and Katsushika Hokusai.
