Yankel Feather was a member of the Liverpool Academy of Arts and the Newlyn Society of Artists. Feather had a difficult upbringing: born in Liverpool as a youngest of seven children in a Jewish family of Austrian origin his youth was shaped by events unfolding around him. After spending some time in the army during the Second World War, the young artist was determined to make a living from painting. Openly gay and strongly rooted in his working class past, he was close to and inspired by Lowry who he was close to in the mid 1960s.
