John Gould (1804 - 1881), White Herons

£650.00

John Gould (1804 - 1881), White Herons.

A hand-colored lithograph from ‘Birds of Great Britain’, framed and glazed.

Published 1862-73)

72cm x 55cm

John Gould's 'Birds of Great Britain' was a groundbreaking publication, which greatly contributed to scientific knowledge at the time. It was released over a decade in a limited edition of 750 folios.

It shows the birds nesting or foraging in their natural habitat: not a specimen, but an animal in it's environment. Gould gained much of his knowledge by observation and experience. He is believed to have made the original sketches but employed the help of his artist wife Elizabeth Coxen Gould, Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf, William Hart, and H. C and other artists.

Even at the time of publication, Gould’s plates were very expensive and only sold to a small group of subscribers and so remain a rare find highly valued among modern collectors.
